Rapper Nas Delivers Fox News Petition, Says Network Is Scared
Posted by Shemuses from Huffington Post
About four hours after the announcement that his controversial, politically charged ninth album was number one in the country, Nas was on a small podium in front of Fox News headquarters in New York City protesting what he sees as racist attacks against Black Americans and presidential candidate Barack Obama. In a brief prepared statement, the multi-platinum rapper pointed out examples of what he and ColorOfChange see as a long racist smear campaign against the Obama family.

The centerpiece of Barack Obama's overseas tour comes Thursday in Berlin when the Democratic presidential candidate gives the only public foreign policy speech of his trip to an Obama-mad crowd of Germans who see him as another John F. Kennedy. He's in a country and a continent making no secret it is ready for change.

Vanity Fair Spoofs The New Yorker Cover
Posted by Shemuses from
Vanity Fair is getting in on the satire action. Taking its cue from Condé Nast neighbor, The New Yorker, the magazine creates a spoof on the infamous Art Spiegelman cartoon. Depicting John McCain with a walker and Cindy McCain with an armful of pill bottles, the Vanity Fair cover tries to draw parallels between its cover and the one satirizing the Obamas. Do you think it accomplishes the same goal? Is it funny? Are you as outraged? Tell us why or why not.

National Hip Hop Political Convention Opens in 2 Weeks
Posted by Shemuses from
What role will this year's convention play in these historic presidential elections? Since the first National Hip-Hop Political Convention was held in Newark New Jersey in the summer of 2004, young voters have come to the polls in big turnouts, driven by a landmark surge of young voters of color. This surprised many long-time political observers, but not the organizers of the Convention--full disclosure: I was there--who had seen the growth of hip-hop activism and organizing around the country.

McCain's
Posted by Shemuses from
A big part of politics, aside from the candidates stumping from city to city, are the campaign's television advertisements. In some cases, these advertisements outlast the candidates and the race itself. Usually, the advertisements spotlight the candidates' interaction with the public and the issues of the day. That's why, the latest advertisement by the McCain campaign entitled "God's Children" is a puzzlement and a sad commentary on the state of the Republican Party, not to mention, an offensive piece of footage to all Latinos, whether Republican, Democrat or Independent...

The Obama candidacy and the new consensus on Afghanistan
Posted by Sandyenglish from
The statements made by Barack Obama during his visit to Afghanistan over the weekend verify that his campaign for president is the mouthpiece for a significant section of the American ruling elite that is insisting on a shift in US policy in the Middle East and Central Asia. Far from proposing any retreat from militarism, Obama is arguing for a faster drawdown of troop numbers in Iraq and a reduction in tensions with Iran, only in order to facilitate a major escalation of US military operations in Afghanistan, potentially extending them into Pakistan.
