Posted by Shemuses from Blog.wired
Fox News Channel anchor E.D. Hill apologized to viewers Tuesday for characterizing a set of Barack and Michelle Obama's gestures as "terrorist fist jabs." The Emmy-award-winning journalist offered the mea culpa after the liberal media-watchdog group Media Matters launched an internet petition Tuesday morning urging viewers to let Fox know that the comment was beyond the pale.

How New And Fresh Is Obama?
Posted by theauthor from
The supporters of Senator Barack Obama continuously tout their candidate as a new type of candidate, a man that is positioned above the fray of the political process. A political genius filled with new and exciting ideas to "change" our country. Obama is indeed a new and fresh face in politics. He served 7 years in the Illinois state legislature before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004. He served just 2 years in the Senate before declaring his candidacy for the office of President. He has relied on his gifted oratory skills to deliver speeches that have inspired a cult-like following. It will come as no surprise that I do not share the same lofty opinion of the junior Senator from Illinois.

Uh-Obama: Racism, White Voters and the Myth of Color-Blindness
Posted by Shemuses from
The extent to which Obama's white support has been directly related to his downplaying of race issues simply cannot be overstated, as evidenced by the kinds of things many of these supporters openly admit, possessing no sense of apparent irony or misgiving. So, consider the chant offered by his supporters at a recent rally-and frankly, a chant in which whites appeared to be joining with far greater enthusiasm than folks of color-to the effect that "Race Doesn't Matter, Race Doesn't Matter," a concept so utterly absurd, given the way in which race most certainly still matters to the opportunity structure in this country, that one has to almost wretch at the repeated offering of it.

Interview: Kavita Ramdas, Global Fund for Women
Posted by Shemuses from World Changing
"I think there are many different ways in which you define leadership. As a feminist, and as a feminine feminist, I truly believe that we don't do a very good job in the United States of believing that you can lead by serving, and I think the United States needs to think deeply about being in service of the rest of the world." -Kavita Ramdas, President and CEO, Global Fund for Women.

Fear of a Black President
Posted by Shemuses from Huffington Post
I like being white. Generally speaking, it's the easiest color in America to be. It's so easy being white that when someone discriminates against me because I'm white, it's called "reverse" racism. My racism has its own special name -- that's how cool it is to be white. I can walk into any store without being followed; hail the cab of my choice; and there's not a country club that wouldn't welcome me, so long as I was clad in the requisite slacks and collared shirt.
