Posted by jeremy from Nypost
For two years, a Brooklyn thug sat in an Oregon jail awaiting trial for a coldblooded murder, and all the fat felon could think about was food - a bucket of greasy chicken, a mouthful of lasagna, a slice of pizza.

A Tall, Cool Drink of ... Sewage?
Posted by Jon from New York Times
When you flush in Santa Ana, the waste makes its way to the sewage-treatment plant nearby in Fountain Valley, then sluices not to the ocean but to a plant that superfilters the liquid until it is cleaner than rainwater. The "new" water is then pumped 13 miles north and discharged into a small lake, where it percolates into the earth. Local utilities pump water from this aquifer and deliver it to the sinks and showers of 2.3 million customers. It is now drinking water. If you like the idea, you call it indirect potable reuse. If the idea revolts you, you call it toilet to tap.

Soy-based foods may lower sperm count (more in fat men)
Posted by Jeff from MSNBC
he researchers found the association between soy foods and lower sperm count was stronger in overweight men, which might suggest hormones are playing a role. "Men who are overweight or obese tend to have higher levels of androgen-produced estrogen. They are converting a male hormone into a female hormone in their fat. The more body fat you have, the more estrogen you produce in your fat," Chavarro said.

New Yorkers try to swallow calorie sticker shock
Posted by Jeff from MSNBC
Putting the brakes on thoughtlessly inhaling calories is exactly the effect New York City health officials hoped the law would have. They say calorie labels could reduce the number of obese New Yorkers by 150,000 over the next five years, and prevent 30,000 cases of diabetes. New York is not the only city pushing calorie labels. New laws in Seattle and California's Santa Clara and San Francisco are scheduled to go into effect later this year,

Salmonella toll tops 1,000; peppers perhaps source
Posted by Jeff from MSNBC
Ed Schultz said on the radio today that this was related to allowing Mexican truckers to bring more uninspected produce into the country. "More than 1,000 people now have become ill from salmonella initially linked to raw tomatoes, a sobering milestone Wednesday that makes this the worst foodborne outbreak in at least a decade. Adding to the confusion, the government is warning certain people to avoid types of hot peppers, too."

Nathan's hot dog eating contest - can science explain how they do it?
Posted by fozapd from The Scientist
As I sit here on a overcast 4th of July, I stumbled acrossed ESPN's coverage of Nathan's hot dog eating competition. It seems interesting enough - 20+ eaters enter a competition to crown the one true great eater. As the contestants enter, I was surprised how many of them were skinny! That\\\\\\\'s right - the greatest eater is not even a fat man.
