Part of Olympic display altered in broadcast
Posted by Jeff from MSNBC
While the dramatic fireworks display actually happened as portrayed on television, members of the Beijing Olympic Committee said it was necessary to replace live video with computer-generated imagery because the city's hazy, smoggy skies made it too difficult to see, according to The Beijing Times, which first reported the story.

Technology | Hi-tech criminals target Twitter
Posted by Newshogg from BBC News
It was only a matter of time before this happened. Puts the whole issue of 'who do we trust' back in the frame (if it ever left). But will make the Twitterati sit up and think?

The IOC is Now Officially an Accomplice to the Communists in China
Posted by robertvance from
Beijing, which has constantly complained about its precious Games being politicized, is itself politicizing the Olympics every time it censors a website. By not allowing reporters to access sites like Amnesty International or the Chinese version of the BBC, the Chinese government is attempting to shield itself from international criticism and arbitrarily filter out political viewpoints that it deems harmful to its image. This action of censoring the Internet in Beijing is a powerful political statement...

New Orleans Public Housing Defenders Face Terror Charges
Posted by Shemuses from Alternet
As activists continue to fight for people's rights to keep their homes in New Orleans, repression by local authorities is brutal. A trial is about to open in New Orleans of housing activists Jamie "Bork" Laughner and Joy Kohler, who face charges of criminal trespass and possession of a "fake explosive device" following civil disobedience arrests at public housing projects slated for demolition. Laughner was also charged under a Louisiana anti-terrorism law passed as the state's answer to the federal PATRIOT Act.

States Fail to Offer Voter Registration to Millions of Low-Income Voters
Posted by Shemuses from Alternet
Another big election year and once again low-income voters are on the sidelines. Millions of low-income and minority voters are being denied opportunities to register to vote by state agencies that are violating a federal voting law, according to members of Congress and voting rights groups. The ongoing failure has led to a nearly 80 percent drop-off in registering low-income applicants at state social services agencies over a decade, according to a recent report by the non-partisan voter advocacy research groups Project Vote and Demos.

Facebook's Beacon is Super Creepy
Posted by Jeff from Idealog.US
A couple of hours earlier, I had purchased tickets to see Dark Knight at the Fandango Web site - Fandango.com. Fandango - not associated with Facebook. Yet, Fandango shared the details of my credit card transaction with Facebook. They did this despite the fact that I gave Fandango my personal email address and I'm registered on Facebook with my work address. So, sure - Facebook was giving me a choice as to whether to publish my purchase to my 297 Facebook friends. But despite my awareness of Beacon - and my 13 year history developing Web applications, I was creeped out in a visceral way. But then, even when I thought I told Facebook not to publish the information, it published to my profile anyway.
