Fire destroys home of congressional candidate Darcy Burner

Eighth Congressional District candidate Darcy Burner’s Eastside home went up in flames today. The fire started between 7 and 7:30 a.m. on the 3600 block of West Ames Lake Drive Northeast near Redmond, fire authorities said. The cause of the blaze remains unknown.

Starbucks to close 600 stores in the U.S.

Starbucks Corp. said Tuesday that it has drastically increased the number of stores it plans to close and could eliminate as many as 12,000 full- and part-time positions as a result. The company said it now plans to close 600 company-operated stores in the United States, up from its previous plans to close 100 stores.

In response, the McCain campaign has mastered the swift and stinging rebuke. When Obama backhandedly praised McCain’s "50 years of service," McCain’s camp cried foul. When Obama suggested McCain was "losing his bearings," strategist Mark Salter wrote a memo accusing Obama of ageism. To calm speculation, the McCain camp released 1,173 pages of McCain’s medical records last month.

Afghan civilian deaths up 60 per cent

The number of civilians killed in fighting between insurgents and security forces in Afghanistan has soared by two-thirds in the first half of this year, to almost 700 people, a senior UN official said Sunday. The figures are a grim reminder of how the nearly seven-year war has failed to stabilize the country and suggest that ordinary civilians are bearing a heavy toll, particularly from stepped-up militant attacks.

Abu Ghraib inmates sue, claiming torture
