"Gay friendly local council policy"
Continue to the storyDespite the dismal weather, some 17,000 people took part in Saturday's Gay and Lesbian Pride event in Brussels' centre on Saturday. The annual celebration traditionally incorporates a protest to demand more rights, but campaigners had less reason to fight and more to celebrate this year after the Belgian government granted gay couples the right to adopt children. Instead, the gay, lesbian and bisexual community is asking voters to support candidates with gay-friendly policies at the upcoming local elections. According to Mieke Stessens of the Belgian Gay and Lesbian Federation, a vote for the Flemish far-right Vlaams Belang is a vote against equality for all minorities, including the gay community.
