This image of God the father, for whom violence is an expression of tough love, is lodged deep in the evangelical imagination. And it twists a religion of forgiveness and compassion into something dark and cruel. Bush threatened to use his first veto while in office to prevent the Senate from banning torture. Likewise, many “Christians” greatly fear that the government might take away their “right” to beat their own children. What does it tell you about a group if their biggest fear is that they’ll be prevented from torturing the defenseless? Jesus did have it right on this one; “It would be better for them if a millstone was hanged about their neck, and that they were drowned in the depth of the sea.”
