A dash of lime -- a new twist that may cut CO2 levels back to pre-industrial levels

Scientists say they have found a workable way of reducing CO2 levels in the atmosphere by adding lime to seawater. And they think it has the potential to dramatically reverse CO2 accumulation in the atmosphere, reports Cath O'Driscoll in SCI's Chemistry & Industry magazine published today.

Adding lime to seawater increases alkalinity, boosting seawater's ability to absorb CO2 from air and reducing the tendency to release it back again.

There's a great scene from "The Brady Bunch" when Marcia - just turned high school freshman - is nervous about fitting in and making friends so she signs up for every club listed on the school bulletin board. This is sort of what I see happening with many of you and all the social networking sites out there.

Facebook's Beacon is Super Creepy

A couple of hours earlier, I had purchased tickets to see Dark Knight at the Fandango Web site - Fandango.com. Fandango - not associated with Facebook. Yet, Fandango shared the details of my credit card transaction with Facebook. They did this despite the fact that I gave Fandango my personal email address and I'm registered on Facebook with my work address. So, sure - Facebook was giving me a choice as to whether to publish my purchase to my 297 Facebook friends. But despite my awareness of Beacon - and my 13 year history developing Web applications, I was creeped out in a visceral way. But then, even when I thought I told Facebook not to publish the information, it published to my profile anyway.

Obama as Disruptive Technology

Some of you may recall that during the early part of the Dot-Com Boom (circa 1995 or so) there was a fair bit of discussion about the effect of disruptive technologies on established markets. In a nutshell, a disruptive technology is one which, once it gains a toehold in the market, renders other technologies entirely obsolete, or completely alters existing markets. A significant recent example is the combination of mpeg encoding of audio/video and digital file distribution which allowed large-scale peer-to-peer sharing of media content, e.g. Napster and Bittorrent, and fundamentally altered the market for that content...

Democratic candidate's campaign website promotes democracy

"Obama is getting mad props for social networking," Stark recalled arguing. "Why don't we use social networking to let him know that he can't keep elbowing his progressive base - the people who got him the nomination - away from the policy table?" A member of my.barackobama.com started the anti-FISA group, and Stark soon joined. In those 10 days or so, the group, with its polite name, "Senator Obama Please Vote NO on Telecom Immunity - Get FISA Right," has grown to more than 18,000 members and become the largest public group on the campaign site.

Popular Hip Hop Site Gets Hacked By Tech-Savvy Racists

Hate 2.0. As of right now, hip hop website SOHH.com is down. This is all well and good, because you probably didn't want to see what was on it earlier. The site was attacked by a group of very anti-SOHH, anti-black, anti-Jew hackers, who infiltrated the forums, splashed racist and anti-semitic pictures on the homepage, and changed all headlines to things like, "Jews Did 9/11″ and "Enjoy This White Wimmenz, N*gger." The group, which gets no publicity here, tried to blame the disturbance on comedy site ebaumsworld.com.
