The nation's largest urban car-sharing company, Cambridge, Mass.-based Zipcar, is absorbing Seattle-based Flexcar in a move that could hasten the spread of a business whose rapid growth relies on lifestyle marketing as much as its promise to save people money.

Executives said Tuesday the two will combine by week's end to create a company three times the size of Flexcar, with more than 5,000 vehicles and 180,000 subscribers in 48 cities. Terms of the merger were not disclosed.

Living And Loving In Lebanon

I

ve been living in Lebanon for 22 years now, my whole life. I was born during war, so all the memories and sound clashes of this horrible experience still flow in my head nowadays. I hold visions of power and resistance against all major disturbances in our society from our well-built civilization. All these years living amidst political tension prevents us from living a normal life, but we love Lebanon.

The High Price of Twinkies: Driven By a Demon Called The Inner Fat Kid

I was a timid little kid. So much so that I

ve often wondered if my caesarian birth simply sprang me from that comfy womb before I was ready. By the time I was halfway through elementary school, I had managed to shield myself from the growing number of bullies with a growing armor of fat...
Eventually I came to feel terribly isolated and freakish. There was only one kid in class fatter than me. Little solace; I saw my own misery in his. My parents tried to help, but it came to nothing.

Civixen: A Blog For Bon Vivants, Potty-Mouths And Shirt-Lifters

Why do I blog? Believe it or not, laziness has been a great motivator. I grew increasingly fatigued of repeating all my HILARIOUS anecdotes over and over and passing around my digital camera so my drunk friends could squint at the display screen. I also spend about 27 hours a day on the Internet reading other people's blogs anyway, so it wasn't much of a stretch to find a format I liked and make the jump myself. Plus, I still haven't found...

Growing Up American: Words From Generation X

I grew up in a family who I always considered to walk the fine line between conservative and liberal. Before I was born, my father was in the Navy, stationed on a ship during the early days of the Vietnam War. My maternal gr-grandfather was in the Civil War. My paternal uncle was in the Army. My paternal cousin was in the Navy and is now in the Army, as an MP doing his tour of duty in Iraq...

My date is 55 and im 19. On our first date, more than two years ago, he took me out to dinner and asked me all about mu life and my aspirations. "I told him how dysfunctional my family was," I remember. "And he said, 'OK, let's go back to my place and I'll just play with you. I'll give you $250 if you just let me play with you.'"

Let's See. A Yacht, Or A New Kidney?

There is a sport that I suppose is played around the world that baffles me, no end. Just because I don't like to watch or play it doesn't mean it's a lousy game. Don't get me wrong. I don't have a grudge against anyone nor do I envy the champions of this sport. I have a good friend who seems to enjoy getting up at four to arrive on the greens by six. Not a terrible scenario...unless you consider that his foursome finishes the round four and a half hours later.

Being Marilyn

I

m a hairdresser by day, Marilyn by night and sometimes the other way around. I perform at all kinds of special events and do live shows in casinos, dinner theaters and things of that sort. I think people fell in love with Marilyn because there was something about her that was just very relatable, unlike many other movie stars that were as famous in that era.

It Takes A Village

When I was at these parties, I was amazed first at how far I have come. I used to be quite intimidated by these sorts of functions; I was always so aware of the glaring differences between me and the other people in the room. I would look around the room and see nurses, occupational therapists, film industry folks, married moms, pastors

and me

an ex- hooker, drug addict, alcoholic, criminal, lacking certain social skills.

There's no life like it: An essay on being a mother

My friend Tom was persistent in his requests for me to join his writers group. He told me to just come once, write about something, or not.

You can do whatever you want,

my cheerful friend said,

the group is very supportive. That

s the whole point of getting together,

he would say somewhat paternalistically,

to support each other.

When I finally run out of excuses I commit to the next Tuesday night meeting. I

m nervous.
