Saw a screening of a documentary called Jesus Camp. It focuses on a woman preacher (Becky Fischer) who indoctrinates children in a summer camp in North Dakota. Right wing political agendas and slogans are mixed with born again rituals that end with most of the kids in tears. Jesus CampTears of release and joy, they would claim the children are not physically abused. The kids are around 9 or 10 years old, recruited from various churches, and are pliant willing receptacles.

Suffer little children

This image of God the father, for whom violence is an expression of tough love, is lodged deep in the evangelical imagination. And it twists a religion of forgiveness and compassion into something dark and cruel. Bush threatened to use his first veto while in office to prevent the Senate from banning torture. Likewise, many Christians greatly fear that the government might take away their right to beat their own children. What does it tell you about a group if their biggest fear is that they ll be prevented from torturing the defenseless? Jesus did have it right on this one; It would be better for them if a millstone was hanged about their neck, and that they were drowned in the depth of the sea.

The Religious Right Is Un-American

Many people associated with the Religious Right in America would have us believe that the United States was founded as a Christian nation. They foster this lie because they want to force their narrow-minded religious beliefs down our throats. They would like us to envision that Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and James Madison are standing with them shoulder to shoulder when they spout their distorted views on abortion, contraception, gay marriage, school prayer, evolution, etc. But to assert that the U.S. is a Christian nation is clearly un-American, if we define "American" as holding dear the precepts and values handed down to us in the Constitution by the Founding Fathers. The framers of the Constitution had no intention of defining our country as Christian. On the contrary, they were deeply concerned about preventing any kind of religious tyranny.

Why worry about the environment or the future when the Rapture is near?
