US-led forces kill 70 Taliban rebels

      Posted by Billbar from Reuters

"Operation Mountain Thrust", a push deep into the Taliban's southern heartland, has accounted for 100 insurgents killed over the past three days. More than 1,000 people, including more than 40 foreign soldiers, have died this year. Around 400 were killed in May alone. Afghanistan is suffering its worst spell of violence since U.S.-led forces toppled the Taliban in 2001. It comes ahead of NATO troops taking over military control in the violent south from the United States.

    • UN report accuses Afghan MPs of torture and massacres

Posted by Billbar from Guardian UK

A 220-page report by the UN high commissioner for human rights, which the Guardian has obtained, details atrocities committed by communist, mujahideen, Soviet and Taliban fighters over 23 years of conflict. Originally scheduled for release in January 2005, the report's publication has been delayed repeatedly due to sensitivities over identifying former warlords still in positions of power. Co-author Patricia Gossman said the report was "not a bill of indictment" but a "truth telling" exercise to help Afghans confront their past. She said she was "bewildered" by the delays in publishing. "It sends the wrong signals. This is something Afghans wanted to see and it's really disappointing we couldn't live up to that."

    • Afghanistan's Second Intifada

      Posted by Damianmann from Informationclearinghouse.

The Taliban have reclaimed southern Afghanistan, reconstruction has been miniscule, and there’s been no attempt to establish security beyond the capital of Kabul. Afghanistan continues to languish in grinding poverty with less clean water and electricity than before the war. It is a failed narco-state with 99% of the countryside under the iron-grip of the regional warlords and drug-kingpins.

      Nato promises new Afghan tactics

Posted by Billbar from BBC News

"I will use military power not necessarily just to defeat the Taleban but just as importantly to secure the future of their villages and their localities," Lt Gen David Richards said. The BBC's Bilal Sarwary in Kabul says that for the last four years many people in southern and eastern Afghanistan have been complaining of aggressive tactics used by American troops.

Obama meets with Karzai, pledges aid to Afghanistan

It does worry me a bit that we’re going to be spending billions in Afghanistan once we leave Iraq … but at least it’s a place that in the past HAS HARBORED Al Qaida militant training camps and Osama bin Laden.

Sounds like any other average decision made by this administration.

Rep. Henry Waxman says Congress will investigate the contract.

Shouldn’t incompetence be an impeachable offense?

Canada and Obama and the world

The power to move hearts and minds around-the-world through words and actions at home is a manifestation of true leadership genius.

It’s part of what gives Barack Obama the potential to be a truly transcending historical leader.
