Must we quit flying to save the planet?

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Times

"Aviation is a luxury we can live without," said a protester named Merrick. Booming air travel, he said, is multiplying greenhouse gases just as the climate-change imperative starts to bite. "It has to be scaled right back," he said.

Air Safety: Plugging Holes in the Skies

      Posted by Jeff from MSNBC

The focus may be wrong. Aviation consultant Michael Boyd calls TSA "the gang that can't screen straight." Boyd thinks the new restrictions will inconvenience travelers—without stopping terrorists. "[They] can strap [liquids] to their legs" when they go through security, Boyd says.

Keep in mind Mike, that the war in Iraq is working … Halliburton et al are reaping billions from taxpayers … as planned.

I just wonder if/when a carbon/pollution tax will factor in to the situation?

Maybe a little off subject: I’ve met Iranians who brag about the skiing in Iran. Never cease to wonder how MILITARY peace keeping can work! How about peace keeping missions that bring in and swap between countries hikers, campers, and skiers, instead of the military! ;)

Well if we can postpone the warming for a couple of years, all our problems will be solved.

As for mountains in Iran, it looks like they have plenty of mountains to go around. Why aren’t they sharing?

Well, the funny thing is there have been actual honest to god suggestions that we should blow up mountains and spread the dust into the air…

Another mitigation scheme sadly… band-aids, instead of treating the problem…

Maybe we just need a giant smog machine to cool the planet. Let me get my car running…

Interestingly enough, the particulate matter released by planes actually cools the planet. Apparently the day after 9/11 was much hotter above the US because of the lack of this particulate deflecting the suns rays.

The answer though, is yes, we must quit or seriously reduce the amount of flying we do… apparently it’s worse to fly than drive your SUV to wherever your going…

But I don’t have any references for these statistics, so take them with a grain of salt…
