    • Hugo Claus 1929-2008: "Each day we should wake up foaming at the mouth at the injustice of things"

      Posted by Sandyenglish

Belgian author Hugo Claus, who died last month, was one of the most prolific and versatile of postwar European writers. From 1947, when he was just 18, he produced thousands of poems, some 20 novels, 18 books of short stories, film scripts, libretti, and around 60 plays, including translations into Dutch and adaptations from English, French, Greek, German and Spanish works. He also painted, and worked extensively in the dramatic arts as a director. He once said that had he grown up in a country with a tradition of cinema, he would probably have been a film director rather than a writer. Some of his works are available in English translations, including his most important novel, 1983's The Sorrow of Belgium (Het Verdriet van België).

Various hunger strikes have been staged across the country over the past few weeks as asylum-seekers and illegal immigrants demand that changes be made to the country's asylum procedure. Now, Geert De Vulder of the Immigration Department has assured strikers in Broekem that their cases will receive preferential treatment.

      "Gay friendly local council policy"

      Posted by j1o2n3a4s5

Despite the dismal weather, some 17,000 people took part in Saturday's Gay and Lesbian Pride event in Brussels' centre on Saturday. The annual celebration traditionally incorporates a protest to demand more rights, but campaigners had less reason to fight and more to celebrate this year after the Belgian government granted gay couples the right to adopt children. Instead, the gay, lesbian and bisexual community is asking voters to support candidates with gay-friendly policies at the upcoming local elections. According to Mieke Stessens of the Belgian Gay and Lesbian Federation, a vote for the Flemish far-right Vlaams Belang is a vote against equality for all minorities, including the gay community.
