      Beware of black swans

      Posted by SoxFirst

Nassim Nicholas Taleb's though-provoking book The Black Swan is about the futility and danger of making and relying on forecasts. His "black swans" are big events that are completely unpredictable and that change everything. The 9/11 attacks and the rise of Google are two examples.

Conrad Black is not going down without a fight. And when it comes to chutzpah, this guy is hard to beat. Last week, he put up a motion asking for an acquittal or new trial on the grounds that the US Government had not proved its case. And he has 1200 page book on Richard Nixon coming out.

The only black faces at the BBC are in the canteen, says McGovern - Independent Online Edition > Med

Posted by theangryindian from The Independent

The award-winning screenwriter Jimmy McGovern accused the BBC of institutional racism yesterday, saying the only black people working there were in low-pay jobs. Interviewed on BBC Radio Five Live, the creator of the popular crime drama Cracker criticised the corporation, telling the presenter, Simon Mayo: "I work quite a lot at the BBC. You see a lot of black faces in the BBC, but you see them in the canteen." The Liverpool-born writer, whose BBC drama The Street won a Bafta award earlier th

Jail and no bail for Conrad Black

Hurray and halleluja!! It’s the DAY OF KARMAGEDDON for His Lardship. Let’s hope for his sake he still has enough of the stolen millions to pay someone else to pick up the soap for him if he drops it.

Charge reduced in 'Jena 6' case | Chicago Tribune

I don’t live there. I live in Las Vegas.

We have our own weird trials happening, or about to happen…that I’m sure will bring all sorts of misguided racial tension…as the last OJ trial did.

I’m not missing it. There’s racial tension here where I live…and everywhere else. It’s astounding. It doesn’t make any sense.

My point is…and it’s the last time I make it. You can’t take the law into your own hands and start beating the **** out of people because you don’t like their attitude.

Was hanging those ropes on that tree a possible hate-crime? yeah. Probably was. Did these six kids have the right to beat the white kid up because of it? I don’t blame them. But, it’s wrong. It’s against the law.

What you are missing Damianmann is that the tension in that town has been severe for decades. You are also overlooking that Democracy Now has reported on several incidents in Jena, not all recent, in which guns and other weapons have been pulled and used against Africans with the European perpetrators not being charged.

If that young man went up to those kids doing nothing but fighting for their liberation and provoked them verbally, then what happened was to be expected. Please do not take what I am saying out of context, but I find it pretty peculiar that Americans are swift to take the side of non-Whites in assault cases no matter what the surrounding circumstances. We all just saw a young White man mistreated and tasered while pinned by several police officers on the floor and a large majority of folks are siding with the officers on the erroneous justification that this particular young White man was a leftist political radical. Therefore, he deserved what happened to him. How Kent State we may be saying, but it is a fair comparison.

We’ve had a Gold-Star father beaten at an anti-war protest by rabid pro-war conservatives. The father is being blamed for his politics on the grounds that if he was a “right” thinking American, the assault would never have happened. We cannot divorce these elements when looking at this case. Race as well as class and social status are all alive in this situation.

Actually, I have a grip. maybe your reactionary response without knowing all the facts is the problem.

Racism DOES exist. No one is denying that. But, for some reason, the white kid who got his ass beat by 6 black kids is the racist. NOT the 6 black kids. I think there’s some confusion here about the law and assault. I’m not here to explain it to you. My take is…what we have here is reverse racism.

I know the details. Some black kids sat under a tree normally ffrequented by white kids. Some ropes were put up (that’s racist and that’s intolerable) But, a kid got beaten rather severly…and no one has any evidence that he hung those ropes…and even if he did, that doesn’t give anyone the right to take the law into their own hands.

The missing fact is that , at least, one of the black kids has been involved in violence before…to the degree that the law was involved.

I support civil rights. I’m almost 50. I’ve probably seen things you guys have just read about. So, don’t you dare assume I’m ignorant of the situation and/or the history associated with racism in America, (I read Howard Zinn as well.)

I think you guys are off the mark on this one,.
