Stocks Recovering as Oil Prices Fall - Dollar at Record Low
Posted by Jeff from New York Times
The dollar fell to a new record low against the Euro as investors worried that the American government has taken on an enormous share of the nation's financial risks.
Mexico’s Famed Monkey-Boy is Back, Black and on Wal-Mart Shelves
Posted by Shemuses
Mexico's favorite monkey-boy, Memin Pinguin, may now find an audience in the U.S. That's because Wal-Mart has decided to carry the reissued comic books series, first released in the 1960s. There's just one problem. Memin Pinguin isn't simply a monkey-boy but referred to in the series as a "Negro."
OpenMoko - Open source phone

There may come a day when your parents ask you what version of the software you're running on your neo. Seriously, I can't bring myself to prostate myself to Apple and return to AT&T and let them lock me into a draconian monopoliesque service contract. It'll be interesting to see what developers do with OpenMoko ... especially a year or two from now.
Getty and Flickr reach image deal for licensing
Posted by Jeff from Seattle Post-Intelligencer
Seattle's Getty Images said it will exclusively offer its customers the right to license images from Flickr, a popular photo-sharing site owned by Yahoo. One analyst said the deal, of undisclosed value, will benefit both companies as well as photographers, who will now have a better chance of being paid for their work.
Cost of oil, gas is totally bogus for surfers
Posted by Jeff from MSNBC
"We all think about oil in our cars, but very few of us really consider the fact that every little piece of manmade equipment around you is oil-based, and surfing's no different," said Mauro, who's seen the price of some surfboards double to $750 or higher. "The price of a surfboard, it used to be something where it was pretty digestible. Now, it's like, whoa, OK, I've got to put some serious thought into this."
The Culture of Meat
Posted by Shemuses from The Tyee
Food safety scares as well as animal welfare, human health and environmental concerns have no doubt given Canadians many reasons to rethink where our meat comes from. There's just one problem: meat that may be safer (that which is healthier, more humanely produced and has less of an overall ecological impact) is not always readily available. This is especially the case in British Columbia. Prior to October 2007, it was legal for a British Columbian to show up at a farm and purchase meat from a farmer. That choice is no longer afforded to anyone because all meat sold in the province must now be processed at a federally or provincially licensed facility.
Don't Go to Commercial

Have you heard the good news? If not, let me be the first to tell you. BET has FINALLY gotten the ol' Don Imus treatment. That's right. Some major sponsors have pulled advertisements from BET, due to the gratuitous violence, profanity and obscenity on some of the cable network's programs, according to a report in the Chicago Defender.
