    • Update: Ohio Removes Vote Caging Possibility

      Posted by Jeff

Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner took decisive action on Friday to clarify and amend the state's voter challenge law with particular aim at a contentious statewide mailer, which Miller-McCune.com reported Friday, the same day the notices went out and Brunner issued her directive.

    • Ballot snafu endangers votes - by McCain operatives

      Posted by Jeff

About one-third of the absentee ballot applications received at the Hamilton County Board of Elections have been ruled invalid because Republican Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign printed a version of the form with an extra, unneeded box on it. Advertisement In a narrow interpretation of Ohio law, Democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner says many of the McCain forms have not been completed properly. If the box stating the person is an eligible elector -- or qualified voter - is not checked, Brunner said, the application is no good.

McCain 'Absentee Ballot Request' Mailers Are Aggressive, But APPEAR To Be Legit

Posted by Jeff from Brad Blog

There are still some concerns, with some of these mailers, that while the address for the Election office may be correct, it may for an office in a county other than where the voter actually lives. I'm trying to look into these instances, seen in both Wisconsin and Missouri, to determine what would happen if a voter sent their absentee request form to a county other than the one where they are registered. Will update with any info I can glean from officials over the weekend...

Misleading absentee ballot forms being sent by McCain campaign

      Posted by Jeff from Smirkingchimp

"Misleading" absentee ballot applications are being mailed out by the McCain campaign to registered Democratic voters in purple states. The return addresses are inaccurate, as well as other information. "Misleading, lying" mailers are going out in Florida and other purple states. It's a caging tactic. Calls are coming in verifying that this is happening in small towns, as well as larger ones.

    • Some McCain fliers give wrong ballot mailing info -- chicagotribune.com

Posted by Jeff from Chicago Tribune

Evidence is mounting that the GOP and McCain Campaign are leading a sophisticated vote caging operation in swing states. Essentially, the campaign is mailing out absentee ballot forms to voters with the wrong return addresses on them or misleading extra check boxes. "The Wisconsin board that oversees elections is fielding complaints that Republican presidential nominee John McCain's campaign is sending out a mailing that includes an application for an absentee ballot -- but in some cases the address is wrong" In these cases, voters can be denied the right to vote or forced to vote with provisional ballots which are initially counted and are subject to additional challenge. Nearly 600,000 Voters Subject to Possible Caging in Ohio

Posted by Jeff from Truth Out

Ohio election officials are sending out a mass mailer stamped "do not forward" to all registered voters today (Sept. 5) with an absentee ballot application and other important notices for Nov. 4. What's important here is not so much what's going out as what's being returned to sender. Unbeknownst to the would-be recipients, the same mailer - just 60 days before the election - has the potential to determine their eligibility to vote, challenged not by election officials but by partisan opposition. A similar mailer in March netted nondeliverable mail from almost 600,000 registered voters in just five Ohio counties who could now have their ballots thrown out for voting under the wrong address.
