Environmental movement: First It Takes, Then It Gives

Posted by Jeff from Wall Street Journal

The Wall Street Journal today writes about the economic resurgence in Hayfork, California created by companies like Jefferson Forest Products, a sustainable timber company acquired a couple of years ago by Upstream21. Upstream21 is a holding company that buys  small to medium-sized businesses and operates them in a socially responsible manner with regard to  its employees, the environment, customers and other stakeholders. I invested in Upstream21 after researching social investing for my article in the Seattle Weekly, Investing for Change. It's possible to be profit-oriented and do well by our communities. In fact, that's a rule that Upstream has written into its bylaws.

Puget Sound orcas feeding in California -- again

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Post-Intelligencer

In what a leading orca researcher calls an ominous sign, a group of the killer whales that frequent Puget Sound and nearby waters has turned up feeding off the coast of California for the sixth winter in a row. L pod, one of three orca families that frequent Washington waters, was spotted Sunday off Monterey Bay.

    • Rethinking Fire Policy in the Tinderbox Zone

Posted by Jon from New York Times

The long-term battle is one that fire experts suggest cannot be won, even with the better building codes and evacuation plans that have become a staple of government here and across much of the West. As the events of this week illustrate — at least 480,000 acres burned, 1,575 residences destroyed and 7 people killed — the cycle roars on with higher stakes, greater risk, and the grim certainty that it will happen again.

Calif. fires overwhelm firefighters - Weather

      Posted by Jeff from MSNBC

It's another Katrina-sized disaster. The Bush administration isn't ready. The National Guard isn't at full force. The Pentagon has few resources to offer. This is the cost of fighting a war overseas without investing in our own infrastructure at home.

it’s because apple has a high percentage or homosexual employes and a ceo that is. makes sence they would stick up for their human rights against this mormon financed campain.

    mormons are some suck ****s.

other wise apple is a dispicable company that engages on protectionist monopolization and acult practices while at the same time being a better windows PC than a OSX intel box  ;)

Social Investing: The Golden State's not-so-golden goose

These cash differences are quite small for investment funds of this size. The costs of investing in smoking may be even higher. Investing responsibly isn’t free. Investing in damaging industries is also not free, the costs are just externalized and borne by taxpayers and the environment later. This article is very poorly written.
