Should Canada unhitch its wagon from the United States? A growing number of Canadians seem to think so. Polls show that a striking number of us view our giant neighbour as an irresponsible, even dangerous, superpower. The war in Iraq, Guantanamo Bay, Hurricane Katrina, President George W. Bush - all these have served to alienate Canadians (and others around the world) from a country that used to be an admired friend and ally. Meanwhile, the economic troubles south of the border - corporate corruption, the subprime mortgage crisis, the rising threat of recession - have made the United States look like an unreliable economic partner, too. A neighbourhood speaks - and hears its own voice

'I really believe there are things nobody would see if I didn't photograph them," photographer Diane Arbus once wrote. It's a comment that came repeatedly to mind reading Hope in Shadows, a collection of photographs taken and stories told by residents of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. The book, which comes out next month, grew from a popular program run over the past five years by the Pivot Legal Society, a non-profit legal advocacy organization based in the neighbourhood. Since 2003, Pivot has been handing out cameras to residents and assembling pictures in a calendar. If you live or work in the downtown area, Gastown or Yaletown in particular, you've likely bought one of these from a street vendor at some point.
Bush seeks to cement legacy of ties with Canada, Mexico

U.S. President George W. Bush is tending to his country's relationship with Canada and Mexico one last time, trumpeting trade over the "scare tactics" of economic isolation. Mr. Bush joins Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Monday in New Orleans for his fourth and final North American Leaders' Summit.

The Canadian pioneer towns that first banned plastic bags are saying good riddance to the long-time retail staple that rolls through garbage-strewn streets like tumbleweed. Leaf Rapids, Man., and Huntingdon, Que., were among the first Canadian towns to banish plastic bags from city limits, and many merchants and town leaders say they don't miss them a bit.
Farley Mowat on the seal hunt

Farley Mowat hasn't wandered far from his home in Port Hope, Ont. in recent weeks, but his name has been making headlines around the world. An anti-sealing ship named in Mr. Mowat's honour has been at the centre of controversy over its tactics to stop sealers in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The vessel, owned by the militant Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, was boarded by the RCMP and Coast Guard on Saturday and the ship's captain and first officer were arrested. Upon hearing of the arrests, the legendary Canadian writer put up the $10,000 needed to bail the crew members out.

Canada's top native chief says the Vancouver Olympics are a potential target for First Nations protest much like Beijing has been a flashpoint for Tibet supporters. Phil Fontaine says native leaders will use whatever chance they can to focus governments on aboriginal poverty. That includes the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. Mr. Fontaine says thousands of Canadians who've marched in support of a free Tibet should be "outraged" at the abysmal state of native living conditions in their own backyard.
Giant tents for prison inmates draw criticism

The B.C. government is facing criticism over its decision to house inmates in futuristic-looking giant tents next to prisons in Kamloops and Maple Ridge as a temporary solution to overcrowding.
