    • Cancer cells evolve in tumors

      Posted by Jeff from BoingBoing

Cancer cells in a tumor evolve due to natural selection. They compete fiercely for reproductive space inside the tumor, changing strategies to beat out other cancer cells and to triumph over chemotherapy.

    • Putting on your face could cause ugly health problems

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Scientists say that some of the chemicals found in commonly used health and beauty products can, in sufficient quantity, cause cancer, birth defects or disrupt hormone function. Ingredients called dibutyl phthalates -- a chemical used to soften plastics and found in nail polish and countless other consumer items -- have been linked to development problems in the male genitals of humans and rats.

    • Gene Called Link Between Life Span and Cancers

Posted by Billbar from New York Times

Biologists have uncovered a deep link between life span and cancer in the form of a gene that switches off stem cells as a person ages. The finding suggests that many degenerative diseases of aging are caused by an active shutting down of the stem cells that renew the body’s various tissues and are not just a passive disintegration of tissues under daily wear and tear. “I don’t think aging is a random process — it’s a program, an anticancer program,” said Dr. Norman E. Sharpless of the University of North Carolina, senior author of one of the three reports.

New test predicts if lung cancer will spread

      Posted by Billbar from Reuters

Researchers say they have developed a test that can predict with near certainty whether the most common form of lung cancer will return after surgery. The new test could save tens of thousands of lives every year by letting doctors prescribe more aggressive treatments for patients whose cancers are likely to reappear, the team of scientists who developed it at Duke University said.

    • Cousins at Risk of Cancer Give Up Stomachs

Posted by Billbar from Live Science

Advances in genetic testing are increasingly giving families with bad genes a chance to see the future, sometimes with the hope of pre-emptive action. People have had stomachs, breasts, ovaries, colons or thyroid glands removed when genetic tests showed they carried a defective gene that gave them a high risk of cancer.

FDA Approves Vaccine That Should Prevent Most Cervical Cancers

Posted by Billbar from Washington Post

The vaccine, which works by building immunity against the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus, was found to be effective in preventing almost three-quarters of all cervical cancers. "This vaccine is a significant advance in the protection of women's health in that it strikes at the infections that are the root cause of many cervical cancers," said FDA Acting Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach.

    How to marry a Canadian

Hi, I am Canadian, and I feel for my American brothers and sisters. I would marry you in a second, or any American that needed help with healthcare.

Medication errors common in kids with cancer - Cancer

I know I’m biased, but I really believe my hospital must have much better rates than this. We have some pretty hard-core quadruple-checking mechanisms in place. It’s possible to reduce medical errors, but it’s more difficult in smaller community hospitals where they are not dealing with such large volumes of patients and standardization is less of a reality.

Suppressed report shows cancer link to GM potatoes

Strange story – it’s a Russian study .. sorry if I’m skeptical … but the suppression must have been for a reason (not a good reason).

    GMO is a disaster.
