      Supreme Court stays Georgia execution

      Posted by Jeff from MSNBC

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday gave a reprieve to a Georgia inmate less than two hours before he was scheduled to be executed for killing an off-duty police officer in 1989. Troy Davis, 39, had been slated to be put to death at 7 p.m. EDT. The stay will remain in effect while the court considers Davis' appeal.

    • Supreme Court Upholds Lethal Injection Use

Posted by Jeff from Truth Out

"We ... agree that petitioners have not carried their burden of showing that the risk of pain from maladministration of a concededly humane lethal injection protocol, and the failure to adopt untried and untested alternatives, constitute cruel and unusual punishment," Chief Justice John Roberts said in an opinion that garnered only three votes. Four other justices, however, agreed with the outcome.

U.S. Supreme Court stays Florida execution

Posted by Jeff from Christian Science Monitor

A Florida death row inmate has been granted a stay of execution by the US Supreme Court in an action that offers further evidence that a de facto national moratorium on executions is in place. The stay, announced Thursday afternoon, came four hours before Mark Dean Schwab was scheduled to be executed by lethal injection at 6 p.m.

    • Mont. Senate votes against death penalty

      Posted by Jeff from MSNBC

Efforts to abolish the death penalty have failed in each of the past three legislative sessions. There are currently two prisoners on death row in Montana and the state has executed three people since the death penalty was reinstated in the 1970s. The most recent execution, of convicted murderer David Dawson, occurred just last year.

    • Amnesty International Criticizes Sadaam's Execution and Unfair Trial

      Posted by Jeff from Rawstory

We oppose the death penalty in all cases as a violation of the right to life and the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment, but it is especially abhorrent when this most extreme penalty is imposed after an unfair trial," Malcolm Smart, director of Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa programme, said in a statement.

Supreme Court rejects death for child rape

I saw today that Obama came out in support of the death penalty for child rape:

"I have said repeatedly that I think that the death penalty should be applied in very narrow circumstances for the most egregious of crimes," Obama said at a news conference. "I think that the rape of a small child, 6 or 8 years old, is a heinous crime and if a state makes a decision that under narrow, limited, well-defined circumstances the death penalty is at least potentially applicable, that that does not violate our Constitution."

Life in prison is good enough…if they survive. It’s not like child rapists get to live the life of Reilly(Riley?) in prison.

Saddam to be hanged by Sunday

Why not go through the effort to give him a fair trial? It would showcase our alleged American values.

If he had been tried internationally and convicted, there would be no such qualms or doubts.

Alito Breaks Tie, Kan. Death Penalty Stays

Souter said that "in the face of evidence of the hazards of capital prosecution," maintaining a system like the one in Kansas "is obtuse by any moral or social measure."
