  For me this raises the issue of the lack of competitiveness even in crowded markets. Why is it so much more expensive or impossible to get a cell phone without a 1 or 2 year contract? So much for consumer rights. This article misses the point.

- California Bans Holding Cell Phones When Driving

  California on Friday banned motorists from talking on cell phones unless they use a headset or speakerphone, although the law will not take effect until July 1, 2008, to allow time to educate the public. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who signed the measure, urged Californians not to wait until then to put down their phones while driving, citing government data showing those who held their phones while driving were involved in 15 times more accidents than those with hands-free setups.

  People who talk on cellphones while driving, even using "hands-free" devices, are as impaired as drunk drivers. "If legislators really want to address driver distraction, then they should consider outlawing cell phone use while driving," said Frank Drews, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Utah.

  In that old battle of the wills between young people and their keepers, the young have found a new weapon that could change the balance of power on the cellphone front: a ring tone that many adults cannot hear. The technology, which relies on the fact that most adults gradually lose the ability to hear high-pitched sounds, was developed in Britain but has only recently spread to America — by Internet, of course.
