    • Lights at night tied to breast cancer - and CFC bulbs...

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Times

Abraham Haim, a University of Haifa chronobiologist involved in the study, said the findings raise questions about the push to switch to energy-efficient fluorescent bulbs, which suppress melatonin production more than incandescent bulbs. "This may be a disaster in another 20 years, and you won't be able to reverse what we did by mistake," Haim said.

Soooo, how many incandescent lightbulbs do we need to buy to get us through our entire lifetimes? The CFC bulbs are manufactured with mercury that’s released when it’s mined, released when the bulbs are broken and released when the bulbs are destroyed as hazardous waste. They supress melatonin and contribute to cancer. Incandescents contribute to the ambient heat in our homes, something I appreciate all winter long, which is when I use most of my lightbulbs. I’ll admit that possibly CFCs have their place, but they certainly shouldn’t be allowed to replace incandescents entirely!!
