  Two seemingly coincidental bits of news crossed my desk yesterday morning. First, the Wall Street Journal contains excerpts of an interview with Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell in which he outlines a vast new initiative to police Internet traffic “for abuse.”

  'The US vs. John Lennon' chronicles the egregious lengths the US gov't went to in order to silence an artist who had the audacity to speak out. Of course, Lennon came from an age when artists did that sort of thing, and he wasn't the only one to get on the authorities' nerves. But we don't live in that world anymore...

  A 23-year-old Jamaican-American on Wednesday became the youngest person and the first black pilot to fly solo around the globe as he glided into Miami after a three-month journey he hopes will be an inspiration to inner-city kids.

- AP Sportwriter Recalls Jackie Robinson's Debut

  I was standing by the batting cage along with a handful of other sports reporters when Robinson strode onto the field with that slightly pigeon-toed walk of the natural athlete. About 10,000 of a crowd that would swell to almost 26,000 at the tidy old park, many of them black, had gathered well before game time. They made no special sound when Robinson appeared.

  Hopefully, things like this can be turned around for good: "I hate gay people," Hardaway said. "I let it be known I don't like gay people and I don't like to be around gay people. I am homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States sports."
