Rob's Ramblings: "Stop Cooking the Planet Event

      Posted by RobBaxter from Rbaxter.blogspot

At least 25 people braved the monsoon rains to participate in the “Stop Cooking the Planet” event outside Kevin Falcon's breakfast speech. Kevin Falcon, BC's transportation minister was discussing plans to increase BC's greenhouse gas emissions by building more freeways.

    • Climate change business

      Posted by SoxFirst

Business leaders like Rupert Murdoch and Richard Branson have finally twigged that climate change is a market issue because it could hurt the bottom line. But there’s a long way to go and there are plenty of obstacles that will stop business and governments from fighting climate change.

    • Push for carbon disclosure on emissions

      Posted by SoxFirst

In what could be a sign of things to come worldwide, green pressure groups in Britain are now pushing for a change in the listing rules which would require companies floating on the London Stock Exchange to disclose their carbon emissions. The demands come in the lead up to the release of a report, written by a former World Bank chief economist and commissioned by the British Government, warning that climate change could tip the world into the worst recession in recent history.

    • Abrupt climate change predicted within 20 years

      Posted by Billbar

Climate experts like Dr Lovelock (who saved humanity once before by alerting us to ozone depletion by CFCs) are saying we can expect abrupt climate change in about a decade or two, when the earth will reset it's thermostat upward 10C, ending the Holocene. This will change our climate from the relative mild weather of the Holocene, to a more hot and dry climatic state that has caused massive extinctions of the past (like the end-Permian, the end-Triassic, and the end-Jurassic, and the most recent episode 55 million years ago: the end-Paleocene, often referred to as the PETM).

    Sustaintability and insurance risks

One of the many tragedies of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina three years ago was the fact that insurance companies used the event to systematically deny claims, leaving victims further in desperate straits. That shouldn’t happen following any natural disaster, and even though the immediate storm effects did not cause as much damage as predicted, there are sure to be plenty of claims for flood damages throughout the Midwest and along Gustav’s path. If you or someone you know has been denied an insurance claim related to Gustav: that would be a site you should visit.

US business in the dark on climate change

I’m sure Canadian businesses aren’t far behind, though there’s an imbalance in the average created almost exclusively by the corporations making their living off exploiting the northern Alberta (Athabasca) Oil Sands – with virtually zero consideration for even the local biosphere or environment.
