      Groups Plan Rally on Mall To Protest Darfur Violence

      An unusually broad coalition of 164 humanitarian and religious groups, including Amnesty International and the National Association of Evangelicals, is planning a huge rally Sunday on the Mall to call for intervention to end the violence in Sudan's Darfur region. Stop Genocide rallies also are planned in Chicago, San Francisco and 15 other cities.

      Chad capital on edge fearing more rebel attacks

      Chad's President Idriss Deby held a victory rally attended by thousands of supporters in the sun-baked capital N'Djamena on Saturday but many nervous residents feared rebels fighting to topple him may return. Chad also threatened to cut off oil production unless it was given access to revenues frozen in January by the World Bank in a spat over how petro-dollars are spent.

      Chad cuts Sudan ties after attack

      "We have taken the decision to break our diplomatic relations with Sudan today and to proceed to close our frontiers," Chadian President Idriss Deby said. The Central African Republic has also closed its border with Sudan in protest at what it called Khartoum's "aggression".

      The Bush administration has settled on the idea of sending up to several hundred NATO advisers to help bolster African Union peacekeeping troops. The move would include some U.S. troops and mark a significant expansion of U.S. and allied involvement in the conflict.

      Arabs offer to fund Darfur troops

      Arab leaders have agreed to pay for the African Union (AU) peacekeeping force in the Sudanese region of Darfur, but it is unlikely the Arab leaders will have to pay out. The AU has agreed in principle to hand over peacekeeping to the United Nations from September.

    What’s the matter, you thought the Chinese government was nice?

    Think of the most oppressive government action you can.

    Then check to see if China has done it.
