      Lieberman: Bush's Favorite Democrat

Posted by Billbar from Rolling Stone

The scene says everything you need to know about the modern Democratic Party. It spends its weekdays sucking off the Pentagon and Wall Street and the pharmaceutical industry, and on the weekends it comes out and spends five minutes getting teary-eyed for the "I have a dream" speech and thinks you owe it your vote because of it.

    • Democrats' Stock Is Rising on K Street

Posted by Jon from Washington Post

Washington lobbying firms, trade associations and corporate offices are moving to hire more well-connected Democrats in response to rising prospects that the opposition party will wrest control of at least one chamber of Congress from Republicans in the November elections. In what lobbyists are calling a harbinger of possible upheaval on Capitol Hill, many who make a living influencing government have gone from mostly shunning Democrats to aggressively recruiting them as lobbyists over the past six months or so.

    • Eye on Election, Democrats Run as Wal-Mart Foe

Posted by Billbar from New York Times

The focus on Wal-Mart is part of a broader strategy of addressing what Democrats say is general economic anxiety and a growing sense that economic gains of recent years have not benefited the middle class or the working poor. Their alliance with the anti-Wal-Mart campaign dovetails with their emphasis in Washington on raising the minimum wage and doing more to make health insurance affordable. It also suggests they will go into the midterm Congressional elections this fall and the 2008 presidential race striking a populist tone.

    • Democrats united on Iraq and Lamont

      Posted by Billbar from Salon

Despite all the bluster and bravado from the White House, a united and impassioned Democratic Party, driven in part by opposition to a disastrous war tied inextricably to Republicans, is exactly what Rove and company fear most. And it is particularly noteworthy to see Democrats ignoring the conventional wisdom pouring out of the usual precincts in Washington that cautions them to hide or muddle their opposition to the war.

Bill Clinton wanted to be the left-wing Reagan. Wouldn’t you say? He was after those same voters.

    Also:

"Thomas Frank wrote a best-selling book four years ago (What’s the Matter with Kansas?), which examined this process in his home state, and his conclusions about the use of coded appeals to religion to induce voters to ignore their own economic interests have become conventional wisdom in ruling class political and media circles.

"While Frank’s book had certain insights into American culture and politics, he ignored the most fundamental factor enabling the Republican appeals to prejudice and backwardness to produce electoral successes—the drastic shift by the Democratic Party to the right and its abandonment of any policies to alleviate economic inequality or improve living conditions for working people.
