      Domain investors take note: Registrations to rise ten percent. With about 62 million ".com" names and 9.1 million ".net" names in use, VeriSign stands to ultimately make $29 million a year from the increase, which will take effect Oct. 15.

      Called "cybersquatters" or "typosquatters," the targets of Microsoft's lawsuits use Web addresses containing terms such as Xbox or Microsoft, or slight misspellings of those words, to lure consumers to Web sites loaded with clickable advertisements. The Web-site operators profit when consumers click on an ad.

      The company's campaign also is building on the work of a team led by Microsoft researcher Yi-Min Wang, whose "Strider" project includes a tool called Strider URL Tracer for tracking down cases of typo-squatting. My first Microsoft boss called our doomed project the Strider project - after her dog. Good luck with this MS.
