    • Landowners gain ground in West's energy turf wars - Los Angeles Times

Posted by Jon from Los Angeles Times

Like many Westerners, Hawkins owns the surface of his ranch but not the rights to the minerals below. Traditionally, property owners in such "split estates" have had little choice but to get out of the way when energy companies start chopping trees, paving roads or sinking wells to get buried fuel. But now they're fighting back.

Climate draft allows spike in oil-sands emissions

Posted by Shemuses from Globe and Mail

Greenhouse-gas emissions from Alberta's oil sands would be allowed to rise dramatically under a draft version of the government's long-anticipated climate-change plan obtained by The Globe and Mail. The internal documents appear to underestimate significantly future oil-sands development as a way of producing more positive figures, said two environmentalists who analyzed the documents for The Globe.

    • Food prices to rise as biofuel demand grows

Posted by Jeff from Financial Times

"Feed prices are rising, so that pushes up the costs of poultry, hogs and cattle and therefore a rancher is going to lower the size of his herd to keep costs down. In turn there is going to be less meat, which means prices are going to go up," said Mr Collins, who is responsible for the USDA's agricultural forecasts and is adviser to Mike Johanns, the US secretary of agriculture.

    Jeff, Jeff, Jeff,

First of all have you ever been to Madrid or London. Al Qaida will kill any Jew, Christian or Hindu they run across and then reload.  A border is not a good defense system for terrorism.  Second, the war and the value of the dollar have weakened us. It is just peculiar that it wasn’t Jimmy Carter who did it to us this time. Third of all the US owns the Stanley Cup (ever been to Detroit ?).  Forth where is Robert Rubin when we need him most !

I’m not sure how’d they feel about adding themselves to the top Al Qaida target list, taking on our ginormous deficit and having to wipe the floor with us on Friday nights in hockey.

One thing I don’t understand is if America is such a great country – why our currency has lost 1/3 of its value in the past 7 years against the Canadian dollar? Anyone? Anyone? My American buck used to be worth $1.55 CDN and now it’s barely even (on a good day).

You’re entitled to your own opinion (if you’re civil) but not your own facts.
