More than 'Shaft': Hayes was goldmine of influence

Posted by okami from Yahoo News!

Isaac Hayes' theme song for the 1971 movie "Shaft" not only became one of pop music's iconic songs, but also the defining work of Hayes' career. Yet the "Theme from Shaft" was just a snippet of the groundbreaking music for which Hayes - who died Sunday at age 65 - was responsible.

      Why I'm Boycotting The Emmys

Posted by adrienneanderson from Now Public

It was such an ugly demise to an intense drama set on Baltimore, Maryland's tough, inner-city streets -and, no, I'm not talking about the shocking deaths of two of Baltimore's most notorious criminals. I'm talking about the ugly, dismissive and undeserving omission of HBO 's incredibly taut series, The Wire , from 60th Primetime Emmy® Award nominations!

Black in America Misses the ‘Why’

      Posted by Shemuses

The cable television program "Black in America" focused on several different socio-economic issues that affect African-Americans in today's society. Aired on CNN, host Soledad O'Brien takes the viewer on a journey through various neighborhoods; effectively shedding light on dark issues that have plagued Black America for some time. Issues such as education, marriage, pregnancy, and violence in different communities throughout the country were highlighted, giving the viewer insight into a plight that only the Black community often feels. While O'Brien did a fantastic job telling the stories of various individuals she interviewed, little emphasis was placed on the story behind the story. Not much focus was given to the "why" in these particular scenarios.

America’s Porn Culture -- Corporate drive for profits is damaging girls

Our whole culture has become sexualized, and the demand is equally on men as well as women.  While this may not be healthy, I don’t think it’s particularly new- think back to the 70s, "free love"- the argument that the sexualization of our culture is a result of the porn industry strikes me as poorly rationalized and uninformed.

America’s Porn Culture -- Corporate drive for profits is damaging girls

Stomping out that so-called "slut culture", in my mind, begins with a thorough investigation of just why so many young women idolize ‘Sex and the City’ or ‘The Hills’. Where does the celebration of vapid sneaziness end and the positive message of female empowerment over sexuality begin? Isn’t the latter just becoming a dangerously attractive way to allow the media to excuse a rapid slide into the former?

I may just be a Guy Who Doesn’t Get It, though.
