Pete Seeger: How Can I Keep from Singing? :: Interview with Sarah van Gelder

Posted by islander07 from Yes! Magazine

It’s not fame he’s been after during his decades of singing. “Fame is a snare and a delusion,” he says. He marched for civil rights from Selma to Montgomery, played music on the banks of his beloved Hudson River, and was celebrated at Carnegie Hall.
He’s been working for change all his life, and he’s seen some of his fondest hopes come to pass.

    • TunesDay: The divine stupidity of Dick Valentine

      Posted by udamnskippy from Scholarsandrogues

What makes Electric Six work so wonderfully is that the stupidity belies a real cleverness, both in lyrics and music. They write great tunes and they perform them really well. They know their way around the rock canon. And their deadpan style helps, too. So today TunesDay honors the fine art of brain-pickled fun by naming E6 our Band of the Week.

    • Oscar: the best moment of the night

      Posted by udamnskippy from Scholarsandrogues

Once was never going to win best film, but the win for best song seemed like the most genuine moment of the night. I like to think that a lot of the people in that crowd realized what I did - that as big and bold and lavish and exciting as their industry is, it’s mostly lost touch with the most important quality of all, honesty.

wow. the police look into the house, see them using drugs and arrest them. them there is hard core drug enforcement policy. i feel a lot safer knowing that Steven is locked up and in the criminal justice system.

America’s Porn Culture -- Corporate drive for profits is damaging girls

Our whole culture has become sexualized, and the demand is equally on men as well as women.  While this may not be healthy, I don’t think it’s particularly new- think back to the 70s, "free love"- the argument that the sexualization of our culture is a result of the porn industry strikes me as poorly rationalized and uninformed.

Nothing remarkable. I have worked in the hospitality industry most of my life. My interests tend to be of things spiritual, about science, the fringes of knowledge, chess, and computer programming to name a few.
