    • Palestinian Youth Express Themselves Through Hip-Hop

      Posted by Shemuses

May 2008 marks the sixtieth anniversary of the Nakba - Arabic for catastrophe, the expulsion of the Palestinian people and creation of the state of Israel. However, the Palestinian Diaspora decided to commemorate it with a different image: sharing and performing hip-hop. A commemoration concert was recently held here at the Civic Center Plaza and it was free and open to the public. Performers were male and female. They ranged in ethnic backgrounds -from Palestinian and other Arab nationalities, to African American, Mexican and Caucasian. They had come from across the United States, Canada, the West Bank and Israel.

      U. Utah Phillips Has Left the Stage

      Posted by Workingwriter

Utah Phillips died last night. Organizer, storyteller, hobo, Wobbly, songwriter, all-round funny guy and amazing performer. Utah (aka Bruce) was a unique presence on the cultural landscape. The younger crowd may remember his two CDs with Ani DiFranco a few years ago. I could go on for awhile, but let me tell you about this link first. This story was posted on the website of KVMR, community radio in Nevada City, CA. Utah recorded a terrific radio show there during his last years, which got out to a few community stations around the country. The page includes a letter Utah sent out to his companeros just 10 days ago, which serves as a fitting epitaph.

    Interview Sarah Palin - InterviewPalin.com

Modern technology has allowed us to record almost every word a politician says.  That naturally leads to videos like this.

America’s Porn Culture -- Corporate drive for profits is damaging girls

Our whole culture has become sexualized, and the demand is equally on men as well as women.  While this may not be healthy, I don’t think it’s particularly new- think back to the 70s, "free love"- the argument that the sexualization of our culture is a result of the porn industry strikes me as poorly rationalized and uninformed.

America’s Porn Culture -- Corporate drive for profits is damaging girls

Stomping out that so-called "slut culture", in my mind, begins with a thorough investigation of just why so many young women idolize ‘Sex and the City’ or ‘The Hills’. Where does the celebration of vapid sneaziness end and the positive message of female empowerment over sexuality begin? Isn’t the latter just becoming a dangerously attractive way to allow the media to excuse a rapid slide into the former?

I may just be a Guy Who Doesn’t Get It, though.
