    • Minimum wage, estate tax bill fails in Senate

      Posted by Billbar from Chron

Senate Democrats on Thursday blocked a Republican attempt to tie an increase in the minimum wage to a reduction in the estate tax, leaving lawmakers with few accomplishments as they head home for summer break. On a 56-42 vote, the Republican Senate leadership failed to garner the 60 votes needed to overcome filibuster on the package despite efforts to entice Democrats by stuffing the legislation with home state incentives such as tax breaks for the timber and coal industries.

Outback buys Santorum lunch, gets lucky afterwards

      Posted by Billbar from Attytood

Amidst the minimum wage/ estate tax talk... Here's another catch that is not getting the attention that it deserves. If the current bill become law, thousands of the hardest-working Americans -- restaurant wait staffers, in particular, and others who collect substantial tips -- in a number of states will be getting a pay cut! Who wins here? Big restaurant chains like the Outback Steakhouses, of Bloomin' Onion fame, which was pushing for this very change in the federal law at the same time it was throwing a big-fundraiser for that measure's most prominent backer in the Senate, Pa. Sen. Rick Santorum -- a fundraiser that was held within hours, by the way, of his now infamous trip to Terri Schiavo's hospice.

    • GOP Makes Conditions on Wage Increase

      Posted by Billbar from Forbes

Republican leaders are willing to allow the first minimum wage increase in a decade but only if it's coupled with a cut in inheritance taxes on multimillion-dollar estates, lawmakers said Friday. "The Senate has rejected fiscally irresponsible estate tax giveaways before and will reject them again," Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said. "Blackmailing working families will not change that outcome."

    • Bush Administration Cuts Audit Staff at IRS for Wealthy

Posted by Jeff from New York Times

More Bush corruption: "But six I.R.S. estate tax lawyers whose jobs are likely to be eliminated said in interviews that the cuts were just the latest moves behind the scenes at the I.R.S. to shield people with political connections and complex tax-avoidance devices from thorough audits." Sharyn Phillips, a veteran I.R.S. estate tax lawyer in Manhattan, called the cuts a “back-door way for the Bush administration to achieve what it cannot get from Congress, which is repeal of the estate tax.”

    • A Look at Republican Priorities: Comforting the Comfortable

Posted by Billbar from New York Times

Two weeks ago, the Senate killed an effort to repeal the federal estate tax on multimillion-dollar fortunes. Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed an estate-tax cut that is a repeal in everything but name. All this effort for a bill that would put $760 billion in new debt on the backs of Americans in the name of making a handful of extremely rich people even richer. Congressional leaders may know how to count votes, but otherwise their math is pathetic.

Repeal the Bling Tax…Erm…Estate Tax Or Not?

      Posted by Billbar from firedoglake

I’ve always wondered why people were so mean to Paris Hilton as to think that she ought to pay taxes…especially when all those pesky maidservants want a higher minimum wage. How gauche! Thank goodness those Senate Republicans are there to tell them to talk to the hand!

    • Wealthy should pay their fair share

Posted by Billbar from Seattle Post-Intelligencer

A recent report published by Public Citizen and United for a Fair Economy shows how a handful of superwealthy families quietly have helped finance and coordinate a massive campaign to fool the American public and repeal the estate tax.
