Congress Finds Ways to Avoid Lobbyist Limits

Posted by Jeff from New York Times

Instead of picking up the lawmaker’s tab, lobbyists pay a political fund-raising committee set up by the lawmaker. In turn, the committee pays the legislator’s way. Lobbyists and fund-raisers say such trips are becoming increasingly popular, partly as a quirky consequence of the new ethics rules.

Much has been said about the impact the new ethics and lobbying rules will have on Congress. But what sort of impact would it have on business? How will it change the interaction between corporate honchos and lawmakers?

    • Why managers fail to do the right thing

      Posted by SoxFirst

How effective a deterrent is the threat of a jail sentence or heavy fine? Why do managers keep stepping over the line when it come to ethical behavior? And why do the same things keep happening over and over again, despite governments constantly bringing in tougher laws. Here’s a study showing tougher laws won’t help.

    Ethics checklist for boards

In most companies today, it truly seems as if ethics are as disposible as paper cups. If we don’t encourage companies to have codes of ethics and actually stick by them (and not vote to suspend them to partake in unethical activities, like Enron did), the corporate world is going to get out of control. As children, we are always told that we need to take responsibility for our actions; however, some Boards of Directors seem to believe in the “Do as I say, not as I do” mentality. Why should we, as consumers, have to worry about the companies that produce the products and services that we use on a constant basis? Hopefully, some industry leaders in the corporate world will read this article and realize how truly important ethics and ethical policies are.

    Vitter was a repeat customer

Vitter was a repeat customer and will continue his illegal and immoral activity as long as he can go to his priest and be forgiven. He and his wife seem to feel that they deserve forgiveness from the American people but in the eyes of many, the hypocrisy is worse than the sin itself. We are a broadminded and forgiving nation, but when looking back on the self righteous attitudes of he and he wife during the Clinton/Lewinsky scandel, most of us feel no pity for these two.
