Admissions of ignorance and mystification are vital to good science. It is therefore galling, to say the least, when enemies of science turn those constructive admissions around and abuse them for political advantage. It is worse than galling. It threatens the enterprise of science itself. This is exactly the effect creationism or ‘intelligent design theory’ (ID) is having, especially because its propagandists are slick, superficially plausible and, above all, well-financed.

Evolution Occurs Faster at the Equator

Posted by Billbar from Live Science

Shane Wright of the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and colleagues looked at the rate of molecular evolution for 45 tropical plants and compared it to that of related species living at more temperate latitudes and found that those living in tropical climates evolve faster than those living in more temperate zones. This could help explain why rainforests have such rich biodiversity compared to other parts of the planet.

Eager to Tell the Stories of Science, a Biologist Evolves

Posted by Billbar from New York Times

Randy Olson, an Harvard-trained evolutionary biologist made the film about creationism's cousin, intelligent design, called "Flock of Dodos." He wants scientists to get off their collective high horse and make the case for evolution to ordinary people with — if they can muster it — a smile.

    • Getting Evolution Up to Speed

      Posted by Billbar from Wired

"People like to think of modern human biology, and especially mental biology, as being the result of selections that took place 100,000 years ago," said University of Chicago geneticist Bruce Lahn. Lahn recently published the results of a study demonstrating that two key genes connected to brain size are currently under rapid selection in populations throughout the globe.
