The trial and execution of Saddam were about revenge, not justice. Instead of promoting national reconciliation, this act of revenge helped Saddam portray himself one last time as a symbol of Sunni Arab resistance, and became one more incitement to sectarian warfare.

    • TV Executives Debate Whether to Show Execution

Posted by Jeff from New York Times

“I think it might be appropriate at some point to see an image of Saddam after he is hanged,” Mr. Capus said, citing previous historic images of dictators who had been killed. “I think about that iconic image of Nicolae Ceausescu in Romania, lying literally in the gutter,” Mr. Capus said. “I want to do this with a measure of taste, but I

    Saddam Hussein executed

Paul, for me it’s about coming face to face with our government’s (and our tax dollars) funded activities. I feel disgusted by this execution – in part because it’s just another failure of George Bush to see the difference between justice and injustice, democracy and chaos. Whatever you think of Sadaam, he faced hanging bravely – and the hooded masks of the executioners made them look like cowards. All in all – I see this whole event as another failure of U.S. imperialism. Good for Haliburton and none of us.

“The tribunal also had a unique sense of timing when choosing the day for Saddam’s hanging. It was a slap in the face to Sunni Arabs. This weekend marks Eid al-Adha, the Holy Day of Sacrifice, on which Muslims commemorate the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son for God. Shiites celebrate it Sunday. Sunnis celebrate it Saturday %u2013- and Iraqi law forbids executing the condemned on a major holiday. Hanging Saddam on Saturday was perceived by Sunni Arabs as the act of a Shiite government that had accepted the Shiite ritual calendar.”

I don’t see this as a victory. Admittedly, this man was a horrible monster. His sons were low-rent criminals. But, I think we could raise the bar a little and maybe show we’re more civilized.
I don’t feel bad that he’s gone. But. I feel bad.

As an American I take no satisfaction in the execution of someone who didn’t receive a fair trial.
