An electronic communication failure Tuesday at a Federal Aviation Administration facility in Georgia that processes flight plans for the eastern half of the U.S. was causing hundreds of flight delays around the country. An FAA Web site that tracks airport status showed delays at some three dozen major airports across the country.

EXCLUSIVE: FAA Tapes Reveal Drama of Obama Jet Incident

Posted by Jeff from ABC News

The incident involving Sen. Barack Obama's campaign plane last month was much more serious than the airline or the Federal Aviation Administration said, according to FAA control tower tapes obtained by ABC News. Just 41 seconds after discovering he no longer had full control of the plane's up and down movements, the pilot told an FAA air traffic controller "at this time we would like to declare an emergency and also have CFR [crash equipment] standing by in St. Louis."

Records: Southwest Airlines flew 'unsafe' planes - CNN.com

      Posted by Jeff from CNN

Documents submitted by FAA inspectors to congressional investigators allege the airline flew at least 117 of its planes in violation of mandatory safety checks. In some cases, the documents say, the planes flew for 30 months after government inspection deadlines had passed and should have been grounded until the inspections could be completed.

When Marion C. Blakey took over at the Federal Aviation Administration in 2002, she was determined to fix an air travel system battered by terrorism, antiquated technology, and the ever-turbulent finances of the airline industry. Five years later, as she prepares to step down on Sept. 13, it's clear she failed.

The FAA wouldn't say how high the first rocket flew, but the environmental study says the initial launches will reach less than 2,000 feet. Records: Southwest Airlines flew 'unsafe' planes - CNN.com

Jeff – No one is more passionate about the safety of our Customers and Employees than we are, and it%u2019s important for our Customers to know that this situation was never and is not now a safety of flight issue.

The inspections in question were one of many routine, redundant, and overlapping inspections of our fleet. And, as a article from today%u2019s Wall Street Journal accurately points out, we discovered the missed inspection ourselves, informed the FAA, and promptly completed the missed inspections in March 2007. The FAA approved our actions and considered the matter closed as of April 2007.

Again, the safety of our Customers, Employees, and aircraft is always our number one concern. Southwest has an excellent maintenance program, and this experience has helped improve the overall safety of the fleet.
