    • FDA: Chemical found in plastic bottles is safe - despite Canadian claims to contrary

      Posted by Jeff from MSNBC

The agency previously declared the chemical safe, but agreed to revisit that opinion after a report by the federal National Toxicology Program said there was "some concern" about its risks in infants. Based on a review of animal studies, the government working group said bisphenol can cause changes in behavior and the brain, and that it may reduce survival and birth weight in fetuses. About 93 percent of Americans have traces of bisphenol in their urine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But the FDA's report concludes that those levels are thousands of times below what would actually be dangerous to adults or children.

    • Weight Loss drug battle royal: Alli vs. supplements

Posted by fozapd from The Scientist

GlaxoSmithKline, marketers of the over-the-counter weight-loss drug alli, which we profiled in last month's issue, is asking the FDA to force weight-loss supplement sellers to conduct clinical trials on their products. With fewer supplements on the market, GSK would face significantly less competition for its product, which the company hopes to turn into profit

    • Feds not addressing drugs in water

      Posted by Jeff from Feeds.feedburner

A White House task force that was supposed to devise a federal plan to research the issue of pharmaceuticals in drinking water has missed its deadline and failed to produce mandated reports and recommendations for coordination among numerous federal agencies, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press.

    • Drug repository would help low-income folks

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Post-Intelligencer

I have a better alternative, a legal way to pass these expensive meds on to people who need them: a drug repository. Wisconsin, Ohio, Georgia, Nebraska (since 2003), Maryland, Illinois, New York and Missouri already have drug respositories. Another half-dozen states are working to set them up.

FDA says cloned animals are OK to eat

      Posted by Jeff from MSNBC

Critics of cloning say the verdict is still out on the safety of food from cloned animals. Yeah, and it's just creepy. The industry will clone six animals over and over - there will essentially be one genetic cow-food source. Go veg.

I work in health and wellness. I have big issues with the FDA. I also used to work in import/ exporting containers into the U.S. from all over the world. Not my favorite agency. Thanks

    FDA says cloned animals safe

    It’s creepy isn’t it!

The report the New York Times has last week from the EU commission on clone safety talked about higher rates of diseased and deformed animals from current cloning practices – but the EU ruled cloned animals were safe to eat because we can trust manufacturers and government inspectors to remove the diseased animals from the food supply. Right.
