      Researchers writing in Science report that the political orientation of test subjects who have strong views is linked to how easy they are to startle. They found that subjects who were more fearful were more likely to have right wing views, such as being in favor of capital punishment and higher defense budgets. The researchers suggest that this psychological difference is why it is so difficult to change people's minds in political arguments.

      Phinney neighbors getting air-raid siren restored

      A block from my house: "The gangly, long-legged tower topped by a 2-ton siren recently was painted, sparking renewed interest in the Cold War relics. An interpretive center is being planned by the Phinney Neighborhood Association at the base of the tower to explain the role of the sirens and the fear of attacks gripping the country a half-century ago. In 1952, the city of Seattle installed 21 new air-raid sirens. They ranged from 7 to 180 horsepower, and the biggest ones could be clearly heard up to three miles away, according to newspaper reports at the time."

    • 5 Men Detained After Plane Lands in N.J.

      Authorities boarded an American Airlines plane Saturday and detained five men after it landed at Newark Liberty International Airport, according to a spokesman for the airport\\'s operator. The plane was bound from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport when an air marshal notified authorities of five men he considered suspicious, according to Marc LaVorgna, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

    Interviews of passengers on CNN say that the men were acting suspicious, had taken helicopter flying lessons, and had navigational devices on their persons.
