Will Success, or That Google Money, Spoil Firefox?

Posted by Jeff from New York Times

In trying to build on this success, the Mozilla Foundation has come to resemble an investor-backed Silicon Valley start-up more than a scrappy collaborative underdog. Siobhan O’Mahony, an assistant professor at the School of Management of the University of California, Davis, calls Mozilla “the first corporate open-source project.”

Idealog: Is anyone getting hurt by Google and the Golden Fox?

      Posted by Jeff from Idealog.US

"Thanks to the Google agreement, the Mozilla Foundation went from revenue of nearly $6 million in 2004 to more than $52 million the next year...In 2005, the foundation created a subsidiary,...mainly to deal with the tax and other issues related to the Google contract." One result of this move is less transparency. Clearly, Firefox has been good for users, good for developers and has kept Microsoft from having de-facto control over Web standards. So if most of us are benefiting, should we care?

    • Students Embarrass eBay With Firefox Add-On

      Posted by Jeff from Slashdot

An anonymous reader sends along a posting from the Grooveking blog on a group of Stanford students who got together to help promote Firefox and ended up releasing a long overdue eBay Toolbar for Firefox before Mozilla and eBay could release their jointly developed extension in Europe. Mozilla's COO said the preemptive release of the eBay Toolbar had ruffled some feathers among European eBay execs.

Thunderbird 2 is out: Free, kick-ass email

      Posted by Jeff from BoingBoing

I'm so happy with my SpamArrest/Gmail set up, I may not care... Thunderbird 2.0 is out. Thunderbird is the free, open email client that does for email what Firefox does for browsing: liberates you from proprietary software, proprietary formats and expensive upgrades and puts desktop mail back into the control of the community of users.

Firefox 3 Beta 3 Brings a New Browsing Interface

I am excited for it – but I wish they would certify plug-ins a bit faster as they go along.

Firefox 3 Beta 3 Brings a New Browsing Interface

Maybe it’s the “resource hog” property of Firefox that has kept me away: my system seems alllergic to FF, as the whole thing overheats and shuts down within seconds of the program being accessed.

Perhaps I should try Beta 3, and see what happens.

Mozilla Firefox 2.0 Soon To Be Released

Sounds very cool. I will NEVER use a microsoft product again. So, this is great.

Try Ubuntu if you haven’t already. There’s no need for Windows anymore.
