- L'Oreal found guilty of racism

  A division of French cosmetics giant L’Oreal has been found guilty of excluding non-white women when it recruited people to hand out its samples of its shampoo and discuss styling with shoppers. L’Oreal’s famous slogan is “Because you’re worth it”. The company seems to believe you’re worth a lot more if you’re white.

- French parliamentary elections: The collapse of the "left"

  With two days to go before the first round of French parliamentary elections, a landslide victory for the Gaullist Union for a Popular Movement (UMP), the party of President Nicolas Sarkozy, seems to be a foregone conclusion. Opinion polls vary, but they all predict that the UMP will win between 400 and 460 out of 577 seats in the National Assembly. Presently, the party has a total of 359 deputies.

  Initial statements issued by the Ligue communiste révolutionnaire (LCR—Revolutionary Communist League) and Lutte Ouvrière (Workers Struggle), components of the so-called “far left” in France, indicate that these organizations have neither understood nor learned anything from the presidential elections.

- Nicolas Sarkozy wins French presidential election

  Nicolas Sarkozy will succeed Jacques Chirac as president of France on May 16. The leader of the right-wing Union for a Popular Movement (UMP), the party founded by Chirac, won yesterday’s presidential election with 53 percent of the vote. His opponent, Socialist Party candidate Ségolène Royal, received 47 percent. At 85 percent, voter turnout was amongst the highest ever recorded. It was slightly higher than the 84 percent in the first round of the election two weeks ago.

  The French spent no small amount of money on the spectacle. The electricity required to operate the train strained the rail line's power grid almost to the breaking point. The overhead electrical lines and a large part of the train's propulsion system "can for all intents and purposes be junked" after a trip like Tuesday's, an engineer at the German train manufacturer Siemens claims.

If Betancourt’s assertions are true, then the United States is once again responsible (at least in part) for the setting up of false ‘heroic rescues’ and similar phenomena.
We should not forget that intitial reports from Iraq claimed that Kurdish forces captured Saddam Hussein, who then turned him over to Coalition forces.
Neither should we forget the Pat Tillman and Jessica Lynch affairs.
