      What Israel and its benefactor -- the United States -- really want is to destroy the democratically elected Hamas government. Israeli President Ehud Olmert made the astounding statement that "the lives and well-being of Sderot's [Jewish] residents are more important than the deaths of dozens of Palestinian innocents." The Associated Press quoted Olmert as saying, "I want no one to sleep at night in Gaza. I want them to know what it feels like."

      The Palestine Liberation Organization said 84 people had been arrested, including seven Cabinet officials and 21 members of the Palestinian parliament The Israel Defense Forces said 87 people were arrested overnight. Of those, it said, 64 were members of Hamas. Another 23 were members of other factions.

      Israeli soldiers arrested the Labour Minister of the Hamas-led Palestinian government, Mohammed Barghouthi, early on Thursday in the West Bank city of Ramallah, Palestinian security officials said. The Israeli news Web site Ynet said troops took Barghouthi into custody at a roadblock, and that soldiers had deployed in several streets in a Ramallah neighbourhood.

      Tanks and infantry, backed by assault helicopters and artillery, set up a strategic observation post at a disused airport outside the southern town of Rafah as masked gunmen waited behind barricades and in alleyways for battle to begin. Threatening "extreme steps" if Corporal Gilad Shalit was not freed, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said the operation would continue "over the coming days".

      Planes strike at Gaza as Israel prepares offensive

      The army said planes attacked two bridges on a route linking northern and southern Gaza to stop militants moving the captive. A helicopter attacked a power plant in central Gaza with missiles, cutting electricity to much of the territory. At the edge of the strip, troops boarded tanks and armored personnel carriers as they revved their engines.
