    • Testosterone gene could offer men competitive edge in sports: study

      Posted by MikeS from CBC

The headline for the story is a wee bit on the misleading side because it says the gene could offer men a competitive advantage. In fact what it really COULD offer is an edge to men who cheat. A significant difference. CBC Radio also managed to suggest possbile racial discrimination because the genotype is more prevelant in Asian men, so if you're doing well and happen to be Asian, the suggestion is you might be cheating. Nevertheless it is an interesting example of how a person's genotype reacts with our environment and medicine.

    • Bush signs bill to prevent discrimination based on genetic testing

      Posted by MikeS from CBC

The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act was signed into law today by President Bush. With genetic tests available over the internet at a price many people can afford, there has been a strong lobby for a law that will help safeguard how that information is being used. The law will make it illegal for employers or insurance companies to use genetic information as a basis for discrimination. The law was first put forward 10 years ago but faced stiff opposition. Many people see this as the law finally catching up with the technology.

    • MPs vote for human-animal hybrid embryos - Telegraph

      Posted by MikeS from Telegraph.c

In a debate that covered the range from pure science to bioethics to science fiction images, British legislators voted earlier this week to allow stem cell researchers to work with animal-human embryos. This means that researchers will be able to inject human DNA into empty cow or rabbit eggs. Depending on where people stand on the bioethics continuum this has been seen as either a huge leap ahead of research in other countries or a leap into uncharted and shadowy medical territory.

Bizarre DNA of Platypus tells a story about us

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Times

There are genes for egg laying, evidence of the animal\\\\\\\'s reptilian roots. Genes for making milk, which the platypus does in mammalian style despite not having nipples. Genes for making snake venom, which the animal stores in its legs. And there are five times more sex-determining chromosomes than scientists know what to do with.

The Family That Walks On All Fours

      Posted by robynoratocom

A documentary film on a family living in remote Turkey aired on BBC in 2006, and again on NOVA a few months ago. Why should we care about this Muslim Turkish family? Because several of the many siblings walk on both their hands and their feet, a way that humans have not walked for millions of years. Are they the key to unlocking the course of human evolution?

After many years with CBC it was time to move on and try something new.First it was to do some work on the ranch then it was a stint as Communications & Marketing Manager with Alberta Beef Producers - the assoc representing ranchers in Alberta. Now I'm the Director of Corporate Communications for Genome Alberta - a non-for-profit company working in the Life Sciences area.
