      USS Cole suspect claims torture

      Posted by Jeff from MSNBC

We'll be hearing more of these. The Bush administration has wrecked the prospect of actually prosecuting any of these folks. "From the time I was arrested five years ago, they have been torturing me. It happened during interviews. One time they tortured me one way, and another time they tortured me in a different way," al-Nashiri said, according to the transcript. "I just said those things to make the people happy. They were very happy when I told them those things."

Gates calls for bill to help close Gitmo

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Post-Intelligencer

This is good news, Gates is working to end a sad chapter in our history. Gates said the challenge is figuring out what to do with hard-core detainees who have "made very clear they will come back and attack this country." I still think he's been weak on getting Bush to cave on Iraq.

Australian Detainee's Life of Wandering Ends With Plea Deal

Posted by Jeff from New York Times

Earlier, the media reported this as a success of Guantanamo Bay's secret proceedings, but read this story between the lines. This alleged Taliban recruit is going back to Australia where his conviction may be overturned by his home court. It doesn't appear he did much wrong other than get caught up with the wrong sorts of folks and having poor judgement. The Guantanamo Bay prison is going to be one of the sad chapters of American history. It's clear his confession was forced...

    • No Abuse At Gitmo, Report Finds

      Posted by Jeff from Tpmmuckraker

This administration is losing all remaining credibility: It's getting to be a familiar story. Soldier or Marine hears about detainee abuse; reports it up the chain of command; and the official investigation says no such abuse occurred. This time it happened to Marine Sergeant Heather Cerveny,... the investigator didn't interview detainees.

Marine: Gitmo guards bragged of beatings

Posted by Billbar from Seattle Post-Intelligencer

The Pentagon said Friday that it will investigate a Marine's sworn statement that guards at Guantanamo Bay bragged about beating detainees and that they described it as common practice. "From the whole conversation, I understood that striking detainees was a common practice," the sergeant wrote. "Everyone in the group laughed at the others' stories of beating detainees."

The Unending Torture of Omar Khadr

Posted by Billbar from Rolling Stone

He was a child of jihad, a teenage soldier in bin Laden's army. Captured on the battlefield when he was only fifteen, he has been held at Guantanamo Bay for the past four years -- subjected to unspeakable abuse sanctioned by the president himself
