      Bill Gates pushes coal

      Posted by lisa from Grist

Cascade Investment Management, Gates' personal investment company, is the largest stakeholder (9 percent) in a controversial coal project in Minnesota. Interestingly, Gates' friend billionaire Warren Buffett recently canceled six planned coal projects. As for whether coal can be produced without contributing to climate change, Wikipedia says "there are no coal-fired power plants in commercial production which capture all carbon dioxide emissions, so the process is theoretical and experimental and thus a subject of feasibility or pilot studies."

McCain calls for 700+ new nuclear plants (and 7 Yucca mountains) costing $4 trillion

Posted by Jeff from Huffington Post

Well, sort of. The HuffPo folks love to write sensational headlines... "We would have to quadruple the number of reactors to 400, which would take decades even if we could somehow return to -- and sustain -- the fastest decadal rate of U.S. nuclear plant construction. But that wouldn't mean just building 300 new nuclear plants, for several reasons. First, by 2050, almost all of the existing plants would need to be replaced, so that is another hundred to build if we want to hit the 80% goal."

The high cost to Alberta of 500 dead ducks

Posted by Shemuses from Globe and Mail

Five hundred dead ducks in the toxic sludge of a Syncrude Canada Ltd. tailings pond have dealt a major blow to Alberta's $25-million campaign to sell the booming oilsands as eco-friendly. Company and government officials confirmed Wednesday that only five ducks were saved after a flock of mallards landed Monday morning on the partially frozen pond filled with oilsands wastes.

Van Jones -- Green Collar Jobs | Fast Company

      Posted by Shemuses from fastcompany

The cheering would begin soon enough. Dressed in a slim-cut gray suit and green tie, Van Jones ascended to the stage grinning and blowing kisses to the crowd. Jones, 39, a 6-foot-1-inch Yale Law grad, was appearing at a summit in San Francisco called "Advancing a New Energy Economy in California." The city's charismatic mayor, Gavin Newsom, was among the presenters, along with corporate bigwigs such as PG&E chief executive Peter Darbee. But no one would outshine Jones.

Consumer Ethanol Appliance Promises Cheaper Gas, Less Emissions

So I would need a shipment of 470lbs of sugar and ?? lbs of yeast each week to fuel my car that used $35 gl/week? .   470lbs shipping cost for $35?   I don’t get it…  The math doesn’t add up even if the cost of sugar is $.02

Maybe someone can do the math…. I can’t

There is no such thing as clean coal. Its a re-branding on the same dirty thing.

Gates understands full well the implications.  He knows neo-cons will spend money on coal.  And it seems windmills.

Chuck, seems like Gates doesn’t understand that the overall impact on the world of his actions (personal and professional) are just as important as the persona he tries to create with his  foundation. Or perhaps we can one day erect different statues to Microsoft Bill, Philanthropist Bill and Indifferent Globalization Evangelist Bill.

Talk about backwards progress. Gates needs to get his act together and start investing in the technology of the future. Isn’t the Midwest synonymous with wind these days? I can’t say that I’m surprised, though, given some of the gaffes his company has made regarding environmental issues in the Northwest.
