GeoEye-1 Is Google's Eye In The Sky - The Channel Wire - IT Channel News And Views by CRN and VARBus
Posted by Jeff from CRN
The satellite's images are good news for Google because it allows crisper, high-definition images to populate Google Maps. Now, instead of wondering whether or not the fuzzy, slightly out-of-focus silver blob in your driveway is your car, you'll be able to tell for sure. The first images GeoEye returned are of Kutztown University in Pennsylvania. The images are rather striking.
Gmail 'Mail Goggles' stymie drunk e-mailing
Posted by Jeff from MSNBC
Kind of ridiculous: The Goggles can kick in late at night on weekends. The feature requires you to solve a few easy math problems in short order before hitting "send." If your logical thinking skills are intact, Google is betting you're sober enough to work out the repercussions of sending that screed you just drafted.
European standoff over search engine data - International Herald Tribune
Posted by okami from International Herald Tribune
BERLIN: For more than a year, European data privacy officials have been battling with U.S. Internet search engines, trying to get them to conform to European restrictions on the storage of personal information gleaned from the Web.
Now, as the U.S. titans Google, Microsoft and Yahoo continue to retain personal data beyond the six-month time limit established this year by the European Commission, regulators say their patience is running thin.

eBay To Disallow Checks and Money Orders In US

In eBay's latest FAQ, they explain that sellers (for the good of the buyers) will no longer be allowed to accept checks or money orders as payment. They can take electronic payments only. So, will Google Checkout, Checkout by Amazon or Amazon Flexible Payment be allowed? No, says eBay: 'Google's and Amazon's products and services compete with eBay on a number of levels, so we are not going to allow them on eBay.' Options are limited to PayPal, ProPay, direct credit payments to the seller, and 'payment upon pickup.' But remember, this is for our own good!
Stuck in Google’s Doghouse

Some say that Google's near monopoly in search ads puts it in a position to decide which business models it will tolerate and which ones it won't.
Google To Digitize Millions of Old Newspaper Pages
Posted by Jeff
On Monday Google detailed new plans to digitize millions of newspaper pages with articles, photographs, and headlines intact so they can be accessed and searched online. 'Around the globe, we estimate that there are billions of news pages containing every story ever written,' Google said in a blog post. 'It's our goal to help readers find all of them, from the smallest local weekly paper up to the largest national daily.' For example, Google noted the availability of an original article from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette from 1969 about the landing on the moon.
