  Google reversed its decision after this article was published. But the right of sites like NewsCloud to republish portions of linked materials and images is at stake here. Google News is simply the first target.

- Philanthropy Google's Way - Not the Usual

  A big story in the NYT today about Google's for profit philanthropy organization. This is similar to the way I organized my Habitat Espresso efforts in the late 90's just with a lot less cash. It's great to see new lifeblood in the NGO game - but I worry about the need to focus on results in key areas.

  Unholy alliance? Google Inc. Chief Executive Eric Schmidt was elected to the board of directors of Apple Computer Inc. at a meeting Tuesday, Apple said in a statement from its Cupertino, Calif., headquarters.

- Google makes novels free to print

  The firm's book search tool will let people print classics such as Dante's Inferno or Aesop's Fables, as well as other books no longer under copyright. Until now, the service has only let people read such books on-screen.

- Google Unhappy at Being Verbed

  A few months ago, I wrote about how editors of the Oxford English Dictionary and the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary were adding "Google" to their dictionaries as a verb (see "Google Becomes a Verb", 10-Jul-06). In it, I noted that trademark lawyers (at least those at Google) probably wouldn't be happy about this event since it dilutes the Google trademark, even though it's essentially free advertising for Google. How right I was. According to a short blip in The Independent, Google is now sending nasty-grams to media organizations - though not us, yet - to warn them about using its name as a verb. Other sites have picked up the news, but as is often the case with the close-mouthed Google, little hard information has emerged. Google has confirmed sending the letters, saying in one instance, "We think it's important to make the distinction between using the word Google to describe using Google to search the internet, and using the word Google to describe searching the internet. It has some serious trademark issues."

  "Now, with e-mail, Google appears to be targeting Microsoft's Outlook and Exchange franchises - although the company plays down any such views." Kind of a non-announcement announcement.

eBay has gone completely down the tubes. Meg Whitman gave a completely crock of s*** speech at the GOP convention. Her belief system may have been profitable thus far for ebay, but I suspect it’s heading downhill from here.
