    • The Scientist : Conflicts of interest at Federal agencies

Posted by Damianmann from The Scientist

Nearly one in five scientists appointed to expert panels of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) had direct financial ties to companies that stood to benefit from the deliberations, according to a sampling released by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). NAS was created by President Lincoln in 1863, to "investigate, examine, experiment, and report upon any subject of science or art" when requested by any department of the government. "I believe there are scientists out there without conflicts of interest who can serve on these committees and do a comparable job" to experts with ties to the affected companies, said Merrill Goozner, CSPI's director of Integrity in Science program. CSPI cites the example of a NAS panel evaluating the risk of mercury in fish that included a scientist whose research was funded by pro-industry lobbying groups such as the United States Tuna Foundation. Another panel studying pollution emissions included 10 out of 11 scientists with ties to carbon-emitting industries. SOURCE: The Scientist, July 24, 2006

Posted by Damianmann from Truth Out

Notebooks belonging to former New York Times reporter Judith Miller indicate she may have been told about covert CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson by another White House official before her first meeting in late June 2003 with I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff who was indicted last year related to his role in the Plame-Wilson leak, an attorney representing Libby claims.

U.S. to rely on Russia for manned spaceflight - International Herald Tribune

McCain denounced Russia as a KGB run state and has called to oust Russia from the G8. How will this partnership be affected if he gets voted in?

'Suicide is Painless' fraudster turns himself in

One of the many tragedies of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina three years ago was the fact that insurance companies used the event to systematically deny claims, leaving victims further in desperate straits. That shouldn’t happen following any natural disaster, and even though the immediate storm effects did not cause as much damage as predicted, there are sure to be plenty of claims for flood damages throughout the Midwest and along Gustav’s path. If you or someone you know has been denied an insurance claim related to Gustav: that would be a site you should visit.

If Betancourt’s assertions are true, then the United States is once again responsible (at least in part) for the setting up of false ‘heroic rescues’ and similar phenomena.

We should not forget that intitial reports from Iraq claimed that Kurdish forces captured Saddam Hussein, who then turned him over to Coalition forces.

Neither should we forget the Pat Tillman and Jessica Lynch affairs.
