US support for gun control rises

Posted by Jeff from Christian Science Monitor

But quietly, American attitudes toward firearms have shifted. Gun ownership is at the lowest level in three decades, and support for the regulation of firearms, which is always been high, has reached a new peak, according to one new poll. Some of the biggest supporters of gun-control are teenagers and college students. For instance, 88 percent of high school students polled by Hamilton College in 2006 supported a five-day waiting period for a hand-gun purchase.

    • Walter Shapiro says, "Repeal the Second Amendment"

      Posted by Jeff from Salon

Fifteen unambiguous words are all that would be required to quell the American-as-apple-pie cycle of gun violence that has now tearfully enshrined Virginia Tech in the record book of mass murder. Here are the 15 words that would deliver a mortal wound to our bang-bang culture of death: "The second article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is hereby repealed."

    • 'Wash Post' Reveals: Virginia Tech Killer Bought First Gun Online

Posted by Jeff from Editor and Publisher

"Dowdy said he cannot be sure that Cho purchased the gun online but that is the most likely explanation for why another vendor would have sent it to the pawnshop for Cho. Gunman Kills 21 on Virginia Tech Campus

This Patriot’s Day massacre gives all of us pause. At height of the war in Yugoslavia the day of the most intense bombing is four days from today – April 20th. The same day when two kids went bowling in the morning and by early afternoon executed themselves, a teacher and their classmates in Littleton, CO (1999).
What has a westernized, violence-glorifying culture achieved with its latest record-setting carnage? More cause for denial, it appears. No, it definitely was not another white guy losing it in public with weapons of his choice. No, this culture, which extols the values of raiders, is not in decline and the least fulfilling one for most of its citizens than any other industrialized country.

Is 22 dead enough people to protect unarmed civilians from uncontrolled gun owners? Just because we choose not to own guns doesn’t mean we should continue to be shot down by those who can so easily get guns without even having to register.
