Hayden responded: "Let me defer that to closed session, and I would be happy to discuss it in some detail." That was the wrong answer. The right one would have been simple: No.

Michael Hayden beyond what has been publicly reported, while hinting that it might have involved the illegal use of space-based satellites and systems to spy on U.S. citizens.

      But the next director of the C.I.A. needs to know the business of espionage, and what General Hayden knows is gadgets, not people. The most important thing a director of the C.I.A. must understand is how to use human intelligence. It's therefore peculiar that the White House immediately reached out to General Hayden, whose background is far from what would seem to be required.
