As Text Messages Fly, Danger Lurks

Senator Barack Obama used one to announce to the world his choice of a running mate. Thousands of Americans have used them to vote for their favorite "American Idol" contestants. Many teenagers prefer them to actually talking. Almost overnight, text messages have become the preferred form of communication for millions. But even as industry calculations show that Americans are now using mobile phones to send or receive more text messages than phone calls, those messages are coming under increasing fire because of the danger they can pose by distracting users.

A First Nations leader in British Columbia says aboriginal issues are missing from the agenda in this year's federal election campaign. Shawn Atleo, the B.C. regional chief of the Assembly of First Nations, said it's frustrating to see issues like the environment and the economy dominating the election, while federal party leaders are ignoring the issues that matter to Canada's aboriginal population. "It's very difficult to talk about the economy in places like B.C. without talking about title and rights issues and negotiations," he said. "It's difficult to talk about health without considering that First Nations health issues are a top issue in this country."

Weary evacuees filled rescue shelters, and local officials watched the costly damage mount from Hurricane Ike after its massive storm surge swamped Louisiana's coastline and flooded the bayou communities where much of the state's Native American population lives. Thousands fled the region as mandatory evacuations were ordered for low-lying portions of Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes, and those fleeing the storm included members of the United Houma Nation, the Pointe-au-Chien tribe, the Isle de Jean Charles Band and the Lafourche Band of the Biloxi-Chitimacha Confederation. Many of the Native Americans were among those living in some of the most vulnerable communities of the bayou including the Isle de Jean Charles...
